Compare Your State to North Carolina

What actually changes on your tax bill when you cross the state line, using published 2026 rates, not a guess.

Most households spend well under their income on taxable goods and services. $40,000 is just a starting point, change it to whatever fits your household.

Where these numbers come from

Every rate on this page is the state’s own top marginal income tax rate and its combined average state-plus-local sales tax rate, published by the Tax Foundation for 2026.

Income tax rates: Tax Foundation, “2026 State Individual Income Tax Rates and Brackets,” published Feb 17, 2026, effective Jan 1, 2026. Sales tax rates: Tax Foundation, “State and Local Sales Tax Rates,” published Jan 20, 2026, updated Jul 6, 2026. North Carolina’s individual income tax rate is 3.99%, flat, effective Jan 1, 2026. South Carolina’s top rate is 6.00%.

This is a simplified estimate, not a tax return. Most states with graduated brackets do not tax your whole income at the top rate, that rate only applies to the top slice of it, so a bracketed state’s real bill is usually lower than what the top-rate math above shows. North Carolina and South Carolina’s math is exact for NC (flat rate) and close for SC (few brackets, most income lands in the top one for a $120k+ household). Treat this as a directional estimate and a starting conversation with a CPA, not a filed number.
